Dedicated IP address

With shared hosting, you share an IP address with the other websites on the same server. You can also get a dedicated IP address for your hosting package.

Ordering a dedicated IP address

You can order a dedicated IP address when you order a new hosting package, or later for an existing package via My products, change package. A maximum of 1 dedicated IP address is possible per hosting package.

Resellers: with a reseller account, the IP address is added to your list of available IP addresses and you choose yourself which user to assign it to.

Adult content: if you offer adult content on your website, a dedicated IP address for your hosting package is mandatory.

What happens when the IP is assigned

Your first dedicated IP address becomes the main IP of your hosting account: all your domains are moved to it. If you order an additional IP address, it appears in your DirectAdmin as an additional IP. You then choose per domain which IP it uses: in DirectAdmin, go to Domain Setup, open the domain and select the new address at the bottom under Add another IP.

When we assign the IP address to your hosting account, the DNS of your domains changes. If you have just visited your site, you may still end up on the old IP address for a while (1 to 4 hours at most); the same applies to visitors. You can prevent this by setting the TTL in your DNS to, for example, 60 instead of 14400, 24 hours in advance. At the moment of the change, the switchover will then take no more than 60 seconds.

Cancelling a dedicated IP address

You can cancel your dedicated IP address yourself in the client area: go to My products, open the package and click Cancel under Own IP addresses. Confirm by typing the IP address. Only the account owner can do this.

This happens immediately and cannot be undone:

  • Domains using the IP fall back to the server's shared IP address. Your websites remain accessible as normal.
  • Mail sent from the dedicated IP stops and is then sent via the shared IP. Any reputation your dedicated IP has built up is lost.
  • You will need to update any DNS records you have pointed to this IP elsewhere (with another DNS provider) yourself.
  • The charge for the IP is removed from your next invoice. No refund is given for the current period.

If the IP address is shared between several users in DirectAdmin (resellers), you cannot cancel it yourself; please send us a ticket instead.

If you cancel the entire hosting package, a dedicated IP address is automatically cancelled along with it.
