Chapter 15 · 15.19
A blank page at the end that won't go away
A blank page at the end of a document that you can't get rid of: it's one of the most searched text questions. There's almost always something invisible involved: a blank paragraph, a page break, or the compulsory paragraph after a table.
Step 1: make the invisible visible
On the Home tab, click Nonprinting characters, the ¶ symbol. Now you'll see every paragraph (¶), every page break, and every section break.
Step 2: remove it
- Blank paragraphs on the blank page: select the ¶ symbols and press Delete.
- A page break or section break just before the blank page: place your cursor in front of it and press Delete. Be careful with a section break: the formatting of the section after it (orientation, header and footer) may change.
Does your document end with a table?
There's always one paragraph after a table that you can't delete. If it doesn't fit on the page anymore, you'll get a blank page. Make that paragraph as small as possible:
- Place your cursor in that last ¶ below the table.
- Set the font size to 1.
- In the paragraph settings on the right, set Line spacing to Exactly and 1 pt, and set the spacing before and after to 0.
Now the paragraph fits on the previous page and the blank page disappears. If that doesn't help, try making the bottom margin slightly smaller via Layout, Margins, or make the table one row shorter.
Tip: switch Nonprinting characters off again afterwards. They don't print, but your document reads more pleasantly without them.
